Basilica of Saints John and Paul

Majestic and solemn, the Basilica of Saints John and Paul is one of the largest churches in Venice. Built between the 13th and 15th centuries by the Dominican friars, it soon became the official burial site for the city’s rulers. Over twenty dogesof the Republic lie here, beneath grand tombs and among Gothic chapels and artworks that tell centuries of history, power, and devotion.

Everything inside speaks of Venice’s grandeur: the soaring arches, soft light, side altars and frescoes that quietly narrate the soul of the Serenissima.

Outside, beside the basilica, stands the famous equestrian statue of Bartolomeo Colleoni, a Renaissance masterpiece. Colleoni, a general in the service of Venice, left a large donation to the Republic, asking for a statue in Saint Mark’s Square.
The Republic, clever and faithful to its traditions, agreed… but placed the statue in front of the Scuola Grande di San Marco, right beside the basilica.
