Isola di San Francesco del Deserto

The Isola di San Francesco del Deserto is a small island in the Venetian Lagoon, situated between Sant'Erasmo and Burano. Since 1233, it has been home to a Franciscan monastery, established after Saint Francis of Assisi visited the island in 1220 upon returning from the Holy Land. The monastery features two cloisters—one from the 13th century and another from the Renaissance period—surrounded by serene gardens and cypress trees, offering a tranquil environment for contemplation.

Visiting Information:

  • Guided Tours: Visitors are welcomed by Franciscan friars who provide guided tours of the monastery, including the cloisters, church, and parts of the garden. The tour lasts approximately 40 minutes. For groups, reservations are required.
  • Operating Hours: The island is open to visitors every day except Mondays, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The monastery is closed on the mornings of September 17th (Feast of the Stigmata of Saint Francis) and October 4th (Feast of Saint Francis).
  • Admission: There is no fixed admission fee; however, a free-will offering is appreciated to support the monastery.

How to Get There:

  • From Venice: Take the ACTV Line 12 vaporetto from Fondamente Nove to Burano. From Burano, private boat services or water taxis can be arranged to reach the island, as there are no direct public transport links. It's advisable to arrange transportation in advance.
